Tourism: Enjoy nature

Nature

Izu is a popular spot with mountains, valleys, the sea, and hot springs. The Izu Kogen area is home to many geospots that are said to have formed their current topography through volcanic activity, such as Mt. Omuro, a nationally designated natural monument, and the Jogasaki Coast.
In 2018, the Izu Peninsula became Japan's ninth UNESCO Global Geopark.
As an Izu Peninsula Geopark, many people enjoy the mysteries of nature, spectacular views, and Japanese culture.

■Why is the Izu Peninsula a globally rare geopark?
A geopark is an area where the earth is alive and has natural heritage related to it.

The Japanese archipelago is made up of a complex crust unlike any other in the world, spanning two continental crusts: the North American plate and the Eurasian plate, and the subducting Pacific plate or Philippine Sea plate.
One million years ago, the Izu Peninsula collided with Honshu, and the land filled the ocean, forming the peninsula we know today.
Its tectonic complexity creates many beautiful landscapes and hot springs.
The Izu Peninsula is a special place on earth that is unlike any other anywhere in the world.
There are geo-areas, exhibits explaining geological strata, etc. all over the Izu Peninsula, and ``geo tours'' where you can learn about the formations of mountains, valleys, rivers, volcanoes, etc. are also popular ways to learn about the earth.
There are also guides such as the Izu Peninsula Geoguide Association, which has professional guides.

Due to its complex history, there are many attractive diving spots. Diving services are also available in Futo, Yahatano, Izu Marine Park, etc., and it is also known as a popular area for divers, and on weekends many divers from the Tokyo metropolitan area enjoy the sea between Ito and Shimoda. Ito Port has an experience facility where you can swim with dolphins all year round.

The photo above shows the view of the Pacific Ocean from Mt. Omuro. On a clear day, you can see the Izu Islands.
